Glaucoma is an incurable, early detection, and continuous care can prevent the disease; Dr. Sanaullah
Director PICO, Dr. Sanaullah, says that glaucoma is an incurable disease. “Patients with high blood pressure and those taking steroids should have their eyes examined regularly. There is also a need for awareness about the disease among the communities. A free eye screening has been arranged at MTI-HMC Peshawar, where people can get free diagnoses from specialists”, said Dr. Sanaullah. He expressed these views while addressing the inaugural function of ‘Free Eye Screening Camp’ in connection with World Glaucoma Week organized by the Pakistan Institute of Community Ophthalmology (PICO), Medical Teaching Institute Hayatabad Medical Complex (MTI-HMC), Peshawar. The camp was inaugurated by Professor Dr. Zia-ul-Islam, former Chief Executive of Khyber Teaching Hospital Peshawar. On the occasion, Dean Khyber Girls Medical College Prof. Dr. Zahid Aman, Medical Director MTI-HMC Prof. Dr. Shehzad Akbar, and Hospital Director HMC Dr. Shehzad Faisal besides other staff were present. On this occasion, Dr. Sanaullah said that glaucoma is a dangerous eye disease that causes chronic blindness, which is incurable. In his speech, he said that it can be caused by eye injury or even surgery. If it is diagnosed at an early stage, then continuous monitoring and treatment can save sight. Professor Dr. Shehzad Akbar said that glaucoma is a silent killer of sight and due to carelessness and lack of timely diagnosis, a person loses sight.
The five-day free eye screening camp at MTI-HMC Peshawar will provide free diagnostic services from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. till March 11. It is pertinent to mention that Glaucoma Awareness Week is celebrated globally every year from 6th to 12th March with the aim of preventing this disease.
