Symposia on Thyroid Cancer held at MTI-HMC Peshawar

Research papers on “Thyroid Cancer” have been presented in a Symposia organized by the Department of ENT Medical Teaching Institute Hayatabad Medical Complex and Head & Neck Surgery Khyber Girls Medical College HMC Peshawar. Subject experts from Aga Khan University Hospital Karachi, Zia U Din University Hospital Karachi, Shukat Khanum Cancer Hospital Lahore, Jinnah Hospital Lahore, Shifa International Hospital Islamabad, Combined Military Hospital (CMH), Institute of Radiotherapy and Nuclear Medicine (IRNUM) Hospital Peshawar, Rehman Medical Institute (RMI) Peshawar, North West General Hospital (NWGH) Peshawar and the faculty of HMC shared the findings of their research papers on the subject and stressed on a multidisciplinary approach for thyroid cancer.
   On the occasion Chairman Department of ENT & Head & Neck Surgery MTI-HMC, Dr. Adnan in his research talk on thyroid cancers in children shared figures of the province. He discussed early diagnosis in children and prognosis in detail and compared that with international numbers.
According to the Journal of the Pakistan Medical Association among thyroid carcinomas papillary is the commonest ranging from 69-71% followed by follicular carcinomas from 11.6-13%. Whereas Radiation is the best-known risk factor for the development of thyroid carcinoma. Since thyroid nodules may be present in up to 76% of unselected females using ultrasound and only less than 5-10% of these nodules are malignant.
